THE SIR STANLEY MATTHEWS COACHING PROGRAMME
Carrying The ‘Soccerhene’ Spirit Forward
Sir Stanley Matthews’ Visit to Ghana
In 1957, Sir Stanley Matthews, the legendary English footballer, was invited to Ghana by the Ghanaian government to celebrate the country’s independence through a series of exhibition matches. Playing for Accra’s Hearts of Oak against teams like Kumasi Kotoko, he drew large crowds and left an indelible mark on the local football scene.
Matthews’ presence inspired Ghanaian players and fans alike, earning him the honorary title of “Soccerhene” (Soccer Chief) during his stay. His visit was part of Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah’s, vision to use sport as a tool for nation-building and pan-Africanism. In addition to playing, Matthews conducted football clinics that deeply influenced the growth of the sport in Ghana.
